We did it!! We won the national tournament this weekend!!
It was such an amazing weekend. It had rained over 2.5 inches during the week so the fields were quite squishy. It was also cold on Saturday morning. We had the first game at 9am against the Calgary White team. Calgary brought two teams to the tournament. One team wore mostly white uniforms (hence Calgary White) and the other team wore mostly blue uniforms (they were Calgary Blue). Rumor had it that Calgary's coach had put most of his good players on the blue team. From the opening bounce we took control of the game. By halftime, the coach rotated the defensive players up front because we kept the ball in our offensive zone the first half of the game. This gave some of our players a chance to rest their legs and gave the defense a chance to get into the game. Final score was 69 - 0.
The afternoon game was against Denver. They are a relatively new squad, but with several good players already. In Denver's first game, they played powerhouse Atlanta. Although Denver lost, they kept the game tight and were only down 16 points at the final buzzer. My Milwaukee teammates were ready to roll though and we pounded Denver 57 - 12. It is a really good feeling to close the first day of tournament play with 2 wins. But we knew the tough game was coming up on Sunday morning against Atlanta.
After a night interrupted by a false fire alarm around 1am, we were back at the field to play Atlanta in the deciding match play game. Atlanta had won both of their games on Saturday as well so the winner of our game was going to the finals. The first half of the game was a tightly contested affair. At the break we were only up by a score of 14 - 11. We got a great pep talk from one of the guys from the men's team. With renewed determination, we hit the field and scored within a minute of starting the half. We never looked back and outscored Atlanta in the second half by over 36 points to zero. That set the stage for a championship match against Calgary Blue.
As the underdog going into the finals, we had several players from other teams coming over to give us scouting reports on the competition. It was nice having the crowd on our side as we got ready to play. It didn't start well as the Calgary team outscored us 9 - 0, but we settled down and began playing our game. Once we started scoring, we didn't stop and ended up with a 51 - 11 victory. It was such a great feeling.
Our mens team also made it to the finals of their division. Unfortunately they lost, but it was still a great weekend of footy for the club.

Yay congrats!!
1Congratulations!
Did you get to play a lot? I love tournaments. Man, I miss playing in
soccer tourneys. There's always so much energy and excitement.
2I got to play a fair amount. Most of the girls are almost 20 years younger than I am so they have a bit more energy as well.
3I know! I think about some of our tournaments where we'd play 4-5 games in two days! It's insane. I don't think my body could handle that anymore.
4YEAH SIS!
So we now have a national champion in the family? Should we bow every time you walk by? Does this mean you actually get a bedroom at Christmas?
It looks like the Calgary "Blue" team wasn't really the powerhouse team everyone expected. I'm glad you won, and glad you're back here. We need another voice in the continued debate.
5You should always bow every time I walk by UD. :snob:
Yeah, I will finally get a room at Christmas, but only because we will most likely be staying with Linda.
6The club website has pictures from the weekend up now. You can find them here: http://picasaweb.google.com/Milwaukee.Bombers
7Congratulations
any pictures of the winning team (preferably standing on the bodies of those that fell before them)
8That is awesome SKB!! Congratulations!
9Which one is you?? It looks like so much fun. Was there a professional photographer there? Some of those action shots are insane!
10I'm #21. In the post-party photos, I'm wearing a grey sweatshirt.
11Congrats, skb! That is great!!
12I'm so excited for you!
I have such a cheesy grin on my face thinking about you being a
National Champ!
13where are the photos????
14click on the link in #7. That will take you to our picture page. Then click on the US Footy 2009 Nationals album.
15would that be you sipping from the cup of victory???
16"It didn't start well as the Calgary team outscored us 9 - 0, but we settled down and began playing our game. Once we started scoring, we didn't stop and ended up with a 51 - 11 victory." That is an unbelievable route. What do you think caused the 51-2 point shellacking? I don't think I have ever seen a score reversal of such magnitude before in my life.
17HOLY MACKEREL, you were playing RUGGER!!!!! I thought it was I thought it was basketball when you mentioned a court. I never even knew there was such a ting as girls teams. Are their any rule changes made for the girls team? That is one rough sport.
were you #7 in the pictures?
18"Are their any rule changes made for the girls team? "
Yeah, the girls have to help their opponent up after they've beaten their skull in.
19GPa, no, not rugby. We play Australian Rules Football. It's a more free-flowing game but every bit as rough (or rougher) as rugby.
The turn-around in the finals was due to ball control. We began making marks (catching the ball after it was kicked more than 10 yards which gives you a free kick) and breaking people away from the defenders.
20"would that be you sipping from the cup of victory???"
Yep, in the post-party pics, I am sipping from the cup. (as well as the bottle of Crown Royal and sparkling wine! LOL)
21Congrats!!
Y'all kicked *ss!
